IP QoS Monitoring – IPQM

IPQM is the basic service of All in One QA solution which allows administrators the ability to analyze IP Service Levels for IP applications and services.

IPQM is a sophisticated, high performance active quality measurement solution for IP performance testing, SLA monitoring, and troubleshooting. This powerful solution comprises distributed core (server) and edge (appliance) probes and a central application for configuration, management, and real-time & historical performance reporting.

And also IPQM provides a complete set of different test types, for active measurement, addressing and a variety of configurable traffic types and payloads.

Additionally, IPQM provides a complete IP services supervision platform which gives you a perceptive to state your network’s ability to deliver the required degree of QoS from network as well as end-user point of view.

IPQM’s primary method of analyzing a network is to send test packages into the live network which is supposed to provide a certain service level. The test packages are affected by problems such as network overload, broken or saturated links, faulty transmission infrastructure, misconfigured network elements. IPQM service collects required network performance metrics like delay, jitter, packet loss, availability, MOS score, reordering ratio, hop count etc. upon receptions of these test packets. Later on IPQM service analyzes all these metrics and by correlating these results, IPQM generates advanced reports to show the network’s actual service quality level.

Metrics can be collected by using One Way or Round Trip methods. If operator choses to perform One Way tests, by the nature of the One Way method, both sides of test need to be a network element in probe type. On the other hand, if operator prefers to run Round Trip tests, IPQM can perform RTT test to any IP address which is capable of responding ICMP messages.

The results of the analysis can be used to determine whether a specific service like VoIP, IPTV, and Internet would function properly or not; as well as to define the delivered quality with respect to factors like delay, jitter, packet-loss, MOS, accessibility, uptime associated with the specific service/application.

By using the advanced capabilities of IPQM service, operator becomes able to define different test types by customizing all parameters of the test scenario like packet count to be sent to the network, packet size, time interval between two packets, priority of packets in network transmission, either voice or data packets are used, if voice type will be used which type of codec is preferred etc. In this way operator can generate various test types according to the needs and demands.

After the test definition is completed, operator assigns the test to an available probe which is located in proper and test required area. Hence the operator starts the tests; assigned probe begins to send the sample packets which have the specific parameters described above to the destination. All these tests packets are behaved like real voice and data packets by network and network elements apply the same QoS approach to these packets during network transmission period. In this way IPQM performs simulation of the real end user and collects the identical network quality metrics, in this way it becomes able to calculate the most accurate results regarding the network quality assurance.

If the results of the performed tests are not in the range of pre-defined metric values, IPQM raises alarms according to the problem type and inform the authorized people by email or it can send an SNMP trap message to the existing network management system used by the organization. Also all alarms are visible to operator on Dashboard screens of the IPQM application. Since the problems are declared to the responsible people immediately in different ways, operators can identify problems quickly and solve them in a shorter time period.
